About the Candidate

Dr. Dale Vanessa Holiday

BA, Wesleyan University (Psychology and Sociology)
MCP, University of Rhode Island (Community Planning)
PhD, University of Washington (Environmental Planning / Minor Studies in Socio-Environmental Impacts of Ecotourism in Rural Coastal Communities)

Dale was born in the small town of Berlin, in southern New Jersey in an area known as the 'Pine Barrens'. At that time, the town population was 3,000 and the area was so rural, the family house didn't even have a number. It was simply 'the house at the end of Oak Avenue'. Her father was a truck driver, and her mother a stay-at-home mom. Neither of her parents even finished high school, but both Dale and her sister were notably bright and talented, and went on to earn advanced degrees. After college, Dale moved to the Northwest in 1991 to enter the doctoral program in Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington, which she completed in 1996.

She has worked as a land planner in the private and government sectors, along with teaching for major universities. She currently works with Clallam County Health and Human Services coordinating a $1.25 million grant administered by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) to prevent youth substance abuse of alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs.

Dale is a published author and instructor with extensive experience in land planning, organizational behavior, and health quality issues. She has written about issues of community viability, sustainability and multicultural communication which have appeared in popular and trade magazines, northwest regional newspapers and books. A life-long cat-lover, she has also written for Cat Fancy magazine.

In May 2010 Dale was invited by the government of the Himalayan Nation of Bhutan to work with the DUDES (Department of Urban Development and Engineering Services), assisting engineers and planners with development projects. She wrote an article about her personal and professional experiences in Bhutan for Planning magazine, the flagship publication of American urban planners. The article appeared in their July 2011 issue.

Her essay entitled, "Home Girl on the Range," about personal travel in remote areas of eastern Oregon, eastern Washington and other regions of the southwestern United States was included in the book Go Girl! The Black Women's Book of Travel and Adventure. This acclaimed publication is the first anthology of travel experiences of African-American women, and includes contributions from Maya Angelou and Alice Walker, among others.

Dale is an animal lover and serves on the Board of the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society. She is a long time outdoors enthusiast whose passions include weight lifting, hiking, cooking, dancing, and Jui Jitsu. She moved from Olympia to Port Angeles 6 years ago, with her husband, Max Mania, who serves on the Port Angeles City Council. Dale is also honored to have Murven Sears (see below) as her campaign manager.
